Warhol’s ‘Marilyn’ Becomes the Most Expensive Artwork of the 20th Century

Andy Warhol’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe sold for $195 million. Recorded as the most expensive work of art leaving its mark on the 20th century, Marilyn was sold in an auction.

Why is the work, which found a buyer for 195 million dollars and is recorded as the most expensive artwork of the 20th century, so important?

Marilyn paintings by Andy Warhol, selected as one of the three most influential figures in modern art in a survey of 500 artists and art critics by The Guardian in 2004, are cited as one of the iconic works of the pop art movement.

Art critics evaluating this work argue that Warhol refers to Monroe’s famous and colourful life before her death and her posthumous disappearance.
