The Importance of Vitamin C for Strengthening Immunity

Sudden weather changes during autumn have led to an increase in the frequency and severity of seasonal colds and flu. As the winter months approach, it is essential to care for our health and strengthen our immune system. But how can we do that?

Importance of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin that plays a crucial role in the formation of collagen protein in blood vessels, cartilage, muscles, and bones. It also helps in the healing of tissue damage and recovery from injuries. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from harmful sources such as toxic chemicals and cigarette smoke. Regular vitamin C intake can help prevent significant health problems like cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. Therefore, a healthy person needs to consume an adequate amount of vitamin C

Ideal Vitamin C Amount

It is possible to obtain vitamin C through food or as a dietary supplement. Usually, excess vitamin C is eliminated from the body and not stored. However, taking too much vitamin C can lead to adverse effects such as nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea. It may also increase the risk of kidney stones. Therefore, taking vitamins in moderation and in sufficient amounts is essential. The recommended daily upper limit for vitamin C intake is 2000 mg.

Foods Containing Vitamin C

The foods richest in vitamin C include citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons, and grapefruits. Other sources of vitamin C include strawberries, tomatoes, green peppers, broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, cantaloupe, papaya, mango, watermelon, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, raspberries, blueberries, winter squash, and pineapple.
